Contact/droplet/airborne essentials for NCLEX-style review.
Standard precautions
For all patients: hand hygiene, PPE as needed.
Contact PPE
Gown and gloves (examples: MRSA, C. diff).
Droplet PPE
Surgical mask within close range (e.g. influenza).
Airborne PPE
N95/respirator + negative pressure room (TB, measles).
C. diff hand hygiene
Soap and water preferred; spores resist alcohol.
Donning order (typical)
Gown → mask/respirator → goggles → gloves.
Doffing priority
Remove most contaminated first; avoid self-contamination.
Neutropenic precautions
Protect immunocompromised from infection.
Sharps disposal
Never recap; use puncture-proof container.
Needle stick response
Wash, report, follow exposure protocol.
Surgical asepsis
Sterile technique for invasive procedures.
Medical asepsis
Clean technique to reduce microbes.
Cohorting
Grouping patients with same organism when needed.
Visitor education
Teach PPE and hand hygiene.
